01 / Overview

The exhibit introduces the use of a transparent screen to create a landscape of the living environment of bamboo coral. The circular layers of the cross-section of bamboo coral are combined with research data and digitized, presenting relevant information such as changes in the marine environment recorded by bamboo coral through new media. Slide the timeline of coral 'rings' to obtain the data information recorded by the coral. The skeleton of the willow coral is mainly composed of calcium carbonate, with the most common being the bamboo jointed willow coral, often referred to as a living fossil of the ocean. It has a lifespan of thousands of years and tree like annual rings. Their annual rings record the temperature and other environmental changes they have experienced, making them an excellent paleogeological thermometer.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
