01 / Overview

Our daily activities generate carbon emissions, such as lighting with electric lights, taking hot showers, and driving... These seemingly insignificant carbon emissions may not be significant at the individual level, but the total amount and impact on climate change from the daily activities of billions of people worldwide cannot be ignored. Therefore, we need to take a series of measures to reduce individual carbon emissions and make our own contribution to mitigating global climate change.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The UN Climate Change Conference held in Copenhagen aroused the Chinese people's sense of responsibility for carbon emissions, and the formula for calculating their own carbon emissions is popular on the Internet. The "carbon emissions" of a household mainly consist of four parts: electricity consumption, water consumption, gas consumption, and fuel consumption. A convenient calculation formula is to multiply the dosage by the corresponding carbon dioxide emission intensity coefficient. Due to differences in energy efficiency among countries, the strength coefficient also varies. In China, the calculation formula and intensity coefficient for household carbon emissions are as follows: carbon emissions from electricity: degrees X 0.785 (kilograms) carbon emissions from water: tons X 0.91 (kilograms) carbon emissions from gas: cubic meters X 0.19 (kilograms) carbon emissions from fuel consumption: liters X 2.7 (kilograms).

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
