The standing sail windmill is a traditional Chinese wind power machinery, first invented in the Song Dynasty, which uses wind power to drive rotation and water wheels to lift water for irrigation. Due to its wind sails being mounted on eight columns around the axle frame, regardless of changes in wind direction, the sails can automatically face the wind, improving energy efficiency and demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of human wisdom and the natural environment.
The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.
The agricultural period embodies the concept of natural balance and achieves harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. During the period dominated by agriculture, the production and lifestyle of ancestral villages were relatively simple, with minimal damage to the natural environment. The basic material needs and outdated production methods mean that people rely more on natural resources such as wind and water energy, rather than excessive consumption or environmental damage. Therefore, the carbon emissions generated by this lifestyle are relatively low, and the community can rely on its natural carbon sink capacity to maintain overall balance. The ancient windmill evolved from sails and had 6 to 8 sets of canopies resembling sailboats, distributed around a vertical axis. When the wind blows, it rotates around the axis like a revolving lantern, known as the "revolving lantern style windmill". This type of windmill, due to its low efficiency, has gradually been replaced by wooden canopy windmills and other windmills with horizontal rotating shafts, such as "vertical windmills" and "automatic rotor windmills". Ancient windmills were controlled by ropes or barriers to sail.
Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
