01 / Overview

On November 13, 2020, the "Canghai" and "Lingyun" deep-sea video landers, led by the Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Central Radio and Television Station, conducted joint operations in the Mariana Trench and completed the world's first high-definition television live broadcast at a depth of 10000 meters. The "Canghai" and "Lingyun" are considered the "official cameramen" for this mission. The "Canghai" spacecraft is responsible for the main filming task. As a 10000 meter deep-sea video lander, it has the ability to shoot, collect, and transmit 4K ultra high definition videos from all depths of the sea, providing the main filming position for the underwater operations of the "Striver" spacecraft. Its partner, the Lingyun, is an auxiliary deep-sea lander that can freely move on the seabed and provide multi angle illumination, presenting a unique second position perspective for the underwater operations of the Striver. The key to achieving high-definition live streaming this time is the advanced deep-sea communication technology. The 'Canghai' Express.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

(1) The official photographer of the "Canghai" and "Striver" spacecraft: The "Canghai" spacecraft is a globally exclusive deep-sea lander that can capture, transmit, and process 4K ultra high definition videos from all depths of the ocean. It can also be equipped with a high-definition camera from all depths of the ocean to broadcast real-time footage of tens of thousands of meters of the ocean floor. (2) The "Lingyun" is an auxiliary deep-sea lander that can also move freely on the seabed, providing more angles of illumination. This also provides an exclusive second landing spot for the "Striver" to operate on the ocean floor.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
