01 / Overview

The carbon cycle is a crucial process in the Earth's ecosystem, involving carbon exchange between the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, and crust. Green plants convert carbon dioxide into organic matter through photosynthesis, which animals obtain through the food chain. When organisms die, carbon is released back into the atmosphere or stored in the Earth's crust through sedimentation. However, human activities such as burning fossil fuels lead to the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide, exceeding the natural absorption capacity and causing carbon imbalance.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The carbon cycle refers to the phenomenon in which carbon elements are exchanged in the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere on Earth, and continue to circulate continuously with the movement of the Earth. The two largest carbon reservoirs on Earth are the lithosphere and fossil fuels, which account for approximately 99.9% of the total carbon on Earth. The carbon activity in these two reservoirs is slow and actually serves as a storage facility. There are three carbon reservoirs on Earth: atmospheric reservoirs, hydrosphere reservoirs, and biological reservoirs. The carbon in these three reservoirs rapidly exchanges between biological and inorganic environments, with small and active capacities, effectively serving as an exchange reservoir. The carbon in rocks is decomposed by various natural and anthropogenic chemical processes and enters the atmosphere and oceans. At the same time, dead organisms and other carbon containing substances continue to return to the Earth's crust in the form of sediments, thus forming a part of the global carbon cycle. The geochemical cycle of carbon controls the migration of carbon between surface or near surface sediments and the atmosphere, biosphere, and ocean. Carbon cycle in the biosphere.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
