01 / Overview

Reverse osmosis refers to the technology of using a semi permeable membrane under pressure to allow water molecules in seawater to permeate from the high concentration side to the low concentration side, separating salts and impurities and obtaining fresh water. Reverse osmosis technology is mainly applied in coastal water scarce areas, ocean going vessels, and marine platforms, playing an important role in providing clean and safe freshwater resources.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The scientific principle of using reverse osmosis technology in water desalination is mainly based on the selective permeability of semi permeable membranes. A semi permeable membrane is a type of membrane with a special pore size that allows water molecules to pass through but prevents other substances such as salt molecules from passing through. When seawater passes through a reverse osmosis membrane under pressure, water molecules are filtered by the membrane and flow towards the low-pressure side, while salt and other impurities in seawater are blocked on the high-pressure side of the membrane and discharged from the concentration end, thereby achieving effective separation of salt and water and obtaining fresh water.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
