01 / Overview

Aerogel is a kind of nano porous solid material with extremely low density (as low as about 3 kg/m3), and more than 90% of its structure is air. Its unique pore structure can effectively block heat conduction and has excellent insulation performance, which is widely used in aerospace insulation and building insulation fields.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

(1) The invention of aerogel gel Aerogel is a solid material form, the density of the smallest solid in the world. The density is 3 kilograms per cubic meter. The common aerogel is silicon aerogel gel, which was first made by American scientist Kistler in 1931 for gambling with his friends. There are many kinds of aerogels, including silicon, carbon, sulfur, metal oxide, metal and so on. In 1931, American scientists made the earliest aerogel from silicon dioxide, known as "solidified smoke" In 1968, Nicolaan and others in France made silica aerogel gel from organic alkoxides such as methyl orthosilicate (TMOS) by one-step sol gel method, greatly shortening its drying cycle. (2) The production process of aerogel In the production process, the liquid silicon compound is first mixed with the liquid solvent that can evaporate quickly to form gel, and then the gel is placed in a similar pressure cooking.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
