01 / Overview

The emotional network refers to two pathways through which emotions are generated. One is the long pathway, where information is finely processed by the cerebral cortex, facilitating emotional control and appropriate coping; The second is the short path, where information is not processed by the cerebral cortex, resulting in a fast response time and ensuring a quick response to stimuli. Understanding two different information processing pathways helps us gain a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of emotions and their impact on individual lives.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The external stimulus signals received by the five senses are transmitted to the thalamus for processing, and the thalamic signals are divided into two paths: long and short. The short path is' passive attention ', quickly transmitting signals to the amygdala. Based on the emotional memory information in subconscious memory, the amygdala determines how to respond emotionally to the event and communicates with other structures in the limbic system through neurotransmitters, generating a series of emotional responses. The long path is "active attention", where the thalamus transmits signals to the prefrontal cortex of the brain to analyze and judge information, such as "Do we need to be angry about this matter?" After judgment, the amygdala is further informed of the judgment result to further regulate the degree of emotional response. Overall, long pathway stimulation information is finely processed by the cerebral cortex (rational brain), which facilitates emotional control and appropriate coping strategies. Short pathway stimulation information is faster and ensures rapid response to stimuli without being finely processed by the cerebral cortex.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
