01 / Overview

Functional electrical stimulation belongs to the category of neuromuscular electrical stimulation, which uses low-frequency pulse currents of a certain intensity to stimulate one or more groups of muscles through a pre-set program, inducing muscle movement or simulating normal autonomous movement, in order to improve or restore the function of the stimulated muscles or muscle groups. When visitors rotates the knob, the brightness of the light strip will change synchronously with the current; After pressing the button, the difference in the amplitude of arm movements with the change of current can be visually observed, thereby visualizing the relationship between current intensity and muscle response.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy (FEST): Hand controlled FES is suitable for patients with post-stroke hemiplegia and spinal cord injuries below C5. The surface electrodes inside the device can provide patterned stimulation to the extensor, flexor, and interosseous muscles, producing hand stretching, grasping, lateral pinching, and other movements to assist in completing functional activities. The amplitude of electrical stimulation and muscle contraction depends on several factors: (1) electrode type, (2) electrical stimulation waveform, time, and amplitude, and (3) electrode position (associated with motor neurons). Current intensity: Muscle contraction increases with increasing stimulation intensity, but once the maximum contraction intensity is reached, increasing the stimulation intensity will only increase pain.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
