01 / Overview

The exhibits mainly consist of handheld rings and interactive touch screen devices. By placing the circular ring at any population position on the screen and watching the interpretation of gene communication content on the screen, we can understand the mixing and evolution of the genome during human migration.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Gene exchange mainly refers to the flow of genes between different populations of the same species, which is achieved through individual migration and reproduction, allowing genes to spread from one population to another. By using genetic analysis methods to identify genetic markers belonging to other ethnic groups within one population, the genetic exchange relationship between the two can be proven. By identifying genetic markers in the mitochondria inherited through maternal lineage or the Y chromosome inherited through paternal lineage, a map of gene exchange can be drawn through analysis and statistical analysis of these genetic markers.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
