01 / Overview

In 1965, psychologist Ronald Melzac and neuroscientist Patrick Wall proposed a widely accepted theory of pain - the pain gate control theory. This theory suggests that the transmission of nerve impulses related to pain is regulated by the "gate" mechanism of spinal gray matter, which is influenced by the balance of activity between coarse and fine nerve fibers. Fine nerve fibers promote the conduction process (like opening a gate), while coarse nerve fibers inhibit the conduction process (like closing a gate). Meanwhile, this theory suggests that the gate mechanism that determines the behavioral and experiential characteristics of pain is regulated by internal brain processes.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Pain is a self-protection mechanism in the human body that sends signals from the nervous system to the brain, informing us of potential danger or injury to the body. But in some cases, we may experience unnecessary pain or the pain may become too intense, which can have a serious impact on our physical and mental health.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
