01 / Overview

Although genetic science has made significant progress, there are still many profound and complex unknown frontier topics waiting for human exploration in this field. The several scientific questions about genes listed in the exhibit are all derived from the "125 Most Challenging and Important Scientific Questions in the World" published by Science magazine in 2021. Through these questions, we can explore the unknown frontiers of genetic science.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The book '125 Most Challenging and Important Scientific Questions in the World' covers multiple key issues in genetic science. For example, what is the role of "junk" DNA in the genome, how does the genome change in the absence of genetic mutations, and what are the functions of telomeres and filaments in the genome. These issues not only concern basic scientific research, but also have profound impacts on fields such as medicine and agriculture. The development of genetic science has provided new ideas for disease treatment and genetic improvement, but at the same time, it has also raised ethical and privacy protection challenges. The exploration of these issues will promote the progress of genetic science and provide support for human health and biodiversity conservation.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
