01 / Overview

In the same homogeneous medium, light propagates in a straight line; When propagating between two homogeneous media, light undergoes refraction. Mirrors and prisms can also cause reflection and dispersion of light. It is precisely these characteristics of light that enable us to observe the vast world and appreciate the cosmic landscape millions of light-years away.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Refraction of light refers to the phenomenon where the direction of light propagation changes when light propagates through different media due to the different refractive indices of the media. When light enters another medium from one medium, at the junction of the two media, some of the light will be reflected back into the original medium, while the other part will enter the other medium and change its propagation direction. The dispersion principle of light refers to the fact that when polychromatic light passes through a medium, the different refractive indices of light of different wavelengths result in different propagation speeds of light in the medium, causing their paths to bend and ultimately leading to dispersion phenomena. When a beam of white light passes through a prism, its path bends due to the different refractive indices of light of different wavelengths, ultimately forming a rainbow like spectrum on the other side of the prism. This phenomenon is a typical application of the principle of light dispersion. The principles of refraction and dispersion of light are widely used in daily life and scientific research.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
