A standard catalogue model: the dimensions, control package and finish are fixed, which is what keeps the price and the lead time predictable. Size, colour and interface language can be adapted without a new design cycle.

01 / Overview

Although dark matter does not emit light, it still has mass and can cause spacetime to bend. By observing the gravitational lensing effect, traces of dark matter can be discovered. If there is a noticeable bending of light in an area where there is not enough visible matter to produce a significant gravitational lensing effect, it may be due to dark matter at work.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Dark matter is a theoretically existing substance that does not interact with electromagnetic forces and cannot be directly observed. However, through observations and theoretical calculations of the universe, scientists believe that dark matter accounts for the majority of the matter in the universe. Dark matter affects the shape of galaxies and galaxy clusters through gravitational forces, causing the light of galaxies and galaxy clusters to bend when passing through dark matter. This phenomenon is called gravitational lensing effect. By observing the morphology and distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, the distribution of dark matter can be identified.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
