A standard catalogue model: the dimensions, control package and finish are fixed, which is what keeps the price and the lead time predictable. Size, colour and interface language can be adapted without a new design cycle.

01 / Overview

Human skin collects information through touch and makes judgments about objects it comes into contact with. Tactile illusions can alter people's perception of the texture of objects. For example, using small frictional changes to trigger the "velvet illusion" in the brain, making originally rough objects appear softer in perception. This technology presents different tactile sensations through the interaction of touch and brain signals, without changing the material of the object itself, by regulating the perception mode, demonstrating how the brain constructs tactile experiences based on the environment.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

When the perception of object mass through touch appears to be inconsistent with physical stimuli, tactile illusions are discovered. Tactile illusions can take various forms, depending on the attributes that people perceive that are different from reality, such as shape, weight, motion, and texture. Velvet hand illusion, which is a tactile texture illusion. Because the unique tactile sensation produced is similar to the feeling of touching velvet. This feeling provides important clues for tactile illusions. A tactile sensation completely different from touching real objects is directly generated on the skin of the palm, just like touching velvet.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
