China is the fourth country after the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan to possess a neutron scattering source. The project was launched in October 2011 and took 6 and a half years to construct. It was finally accepted in August 2018 with a total investment of approximately 2.3 billion yuan and is located in Dongguan. Spallation neutron sources include high current proton linear accelerators and fast cycle synchrotron accelerators for accelerating protons, target stations for proton impact, and approximately 20 neutron spectrometers, supporting various experimental research and scientific testing facilities. In addition, it also covers ancillary facility engineering. Spallation neutron sources not only play an important role in basic research and high-tech innovation, but also drive the upgrading of related technology industries and play a key role in promoting economic development. They are undoubtedly a national treasure and a symbol of the comprehensive strength of a major country.
The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.
Particle physics has many technological applications, the most direct of which is synchrotron radiation devices, which are essential means to achieve international leadership. The first scattering neutron source in China, the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), started construction in Dongguan, Guangdong Province in 2011. It was completed and passed national acceptance in August 2018, and officially opened to users in September of the same year, achieving stable and efficient operation. Spallation neutron sources can not only meet the cutting-edge equipment needs of major scientific research projects such as aerospace and deep-sea exploration, but also serve people's daily lives. China's Spallation neutron sources are a complex whole composed of various high-precision and cutting-edge equipment. It includes a linear accelerator, a fast cycle synchrotron, a target station, and three neutron scattering spectrometers for scientific experiments in Phase I. Its working principle is to first emit negative hydrogen ions from a linear accelerator, then strip out protons in a circular accelerator and continue to accelerate, and then impact the target station.
Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
