01 / Overview

The blackbody radiation law describes the spectral distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted by an ideal blackbody at any given temperature. This law states that the radiation intensity of a blackbody increases with temperature, and the peak wavelength of radiation is inversely proportional to temperature. Planck successfully explained the experimental data of blackbody radiation by assuming energy quantization, where energy is emitted in discrete "quantum" form. The thermal radiation experimental device is used to measure the electromagnetic radiation emitted by objects at different temperatures. It usually includes a heatable blackbody radiation source and radiation intensity measurement equipment, such as a radiometer or infrared detector. By recording the radiation intensity of the radiation source at different temperatures, the Stefan Boltzmann law and Wien displacement law can be verified, revealing the relationship between radiation characteristics and temperature.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

A blackbody is an ideal object that can absorb all external radiation without reflection or transmission, with an absorption rate of 100%. At the end of the 19th century, blackbody radiation experiments discovered energy discontinuity, and Planck established the formula for blackbody radiation law, using energy quantization as a mathematical derivation premise.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
