01 / Overview

Fiber optic, also known as optical fiber, is a slender transparent material used for long-distance, high bandwidth information transmission. In 1966, Chinese scientist Gao Kun, known as the "father of optical fibers", pioneered the basic principles of the application of optical fibers in communication. In 1970, Corning Inc. successfully developed low loss optical fiber, achieving a major breakthrough in fiber optic communication technology. Fiber optic has quickly become the backbone of modern communication networks due to its fast transmission speed, large capacity, and strong anti-interference ability.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

When light travels from a dense medium to a sparse medium and the incident angle is greater than the critical angle, the refracted light disappears completely, leaving only the reflected light. This phenomenon is called total reflection. Fiber optics use the principle of total reflection of light to transmit light from one end to the other. A single optical fiber transmits a single light point, and the fiber array formed by fiber bundles can also transmit images, resulting in patterns on disks in the display area. Fiber optic communication is the use of light as a carrier, utilizing the principle of total reflection of light to achieve near lossless long-distance transmission of information.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
