01 / Overview

In this exhibit, visitors will visually experience the lightweight characteristics of carbon fiber materials by observing and touching two "meteorite" samples with similar appearances but completely different materials and sizes. One set of exhibits consists of natural meteorite objects, while the other set consists of replicas made using carbon fiber technology. Viewers can personally weigh and compare the weight difference between the two, experiencing the lightweight and high-strength characteristics of carbon fiber firsthand. The accompanying science popularization exhibit board will provide a detailed explanation of the microstructure characteristics of carbon fiber and the scientific basis for its lightweight principle.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

(1) The core of the interactive exhibit "Low Density of Carbon Fiber" is to showcase the unique properties of carbon fiber materials, especially their lightweight and high-strength characteristics. Carbon fiber is a fibrous material formed by the specific arrangement of carbon atoms, which endows carbon fiber with extremely high strength and rigidity while maintaining extremely low density. The following are the scientific principles behind the lightweight properties of carbon fiber: 1. Microstructure: The lightweight properties of carbon fiber first come from its microstructure. Carbon fiber is composed of countless tiny chains of carbon atoms arranged in an almost perfect hexagonal pattern, forming a structure called graphene. Graphene is a two-dimensional material with extremely high strength and rigidity, while having an extremely low density. 2. Fibrosis process: In the manufacturing process, carbon fibers typically start from polymer precursors (such as polypropylene) and undergo a series of chemical and heat treatment steps, including oxidation, carbonization, and graphitization, to convert the polymer into carbon.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
