01 / Overview

The International System of Units (SI) is a globally unified system of measurement units and the cornerstone of the international system of measurement. It was established at the 11th International Conference on Weights and Measures in 1960. The International System of Units includes basic units, derived units, and auxiliary units. At present, SI defines seven basic units: meter, kilogram, second, ampere, Kelvin, Candela, and mole. At the 26th International Conference on Weights and Measures in 2018, 53 member countries, including China, collectively voted to adopt Resolution 1 on the revision of the International System of Units (SI), which will use quantized natural constants as a new measurement benchmark. The quantization of basic units marks a crucial step forward in metrology science, not only making metrology more accurate and scientific, but also ushering in a new era of quantum metrology.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The International System of Units is a globally unified system of measurement units and the cornerstone of the international system of measurement. This not only makes metrology more accurate and scientific, but also opens up a new era of quantum metrology.  Meter: The distance traveled by light in vacuum within 1/299792458 seconds.  Kilogram: determined by the precise Planck constant h=6.62607015 × 10 ^ -34Js (J=kgm ^ 2 · s ^ -2).  Second: Between the two hyperfine energy levels of cesium-133 atom in the ground state.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
