01 / Overview

By changing the room temperature and observing the changes in the state of the alloy module, we can understand the memory alloy. The exhibit mainly consists of three sets of memory alloy modules. Press the start button and observe the status of each group of objects. It can be seen that the three memory alloy modules exhibit phenomena such as butterfly spreading wings, spoon bending, and petal blooming with temperature changes. When the temperature drops to room temperature, the three modules return to their original state. Target audience: Adolescents aged 6-15. Display format: Electromechanical interactive device operation instructions (audience experience) 1 Press the start button to change the room temperature; 2. Observe the state of each group of objects and observe the temperature changes of three memory alloy modules; 3. When the temperature drops to room temperature, observe the three modules return to their original state. Describing the intrinsic connections between storylines and exhibits, expanding knowledge in the field of chemistry, and memory alloys.

02 / How visitors use it

Interaction type: Electromechanical interactive. The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Memory alloys, also known as shape memory alloys, are in a martensitic state at room temperature. When heated to a specific temperature, their crystal structure undergoes deformation and transforms into an austenitic state. Shape memory alloy is the material with the best shape memory performance among shape memory materials. So far, more than 50 alloys have been found to have shape memory effects. There are many successful examples of applications in the aerospace field. The massive antenna on artificial satellites can be made of memory alloy. Before launching the artificial satellite, the parabolic antenna is folded and installed inside the satellite body. After the rocket takes off and sends the artificial satellite to the predetermined orbit, it only needs to be heated. The folded satellite antenna naturally unfolds due to its "memory" function, restoring its parabolic shape. Reference materials.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
