01 / Overview

When the brain processes sound, it automatically recognizes patterns in the sound. For repetitive and unstructured sounds, the brain relies on its existing experience and sound memory to make quick judgments. Therefore, when we judge similar sounds, we are often deceived by our own experience.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Listening illusion is also called mishearing. The brain uses multiple senses simultaneously to process information, and scientists have found that speech perception is an activity involving both visual and auditory channels, which refer to information from both visual mouth shape and auditory sound channels. When the information from both auditory and visual channels is consistent, the information transmitted by both channels simultaneously is faster and more accurate than that transmitted by a single auditory channel, that is, the speech information conveyed by visual mouth shape helps to understand auditory speech and eliminate ambiguity. However, when the information from the audio-visual channels contradicts each other, that is, when the visual mouth shape and auditory sound do not match, auditory illusion may occur.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
