01 / Overview

Chinese scientists have achieved micrometer level resolution 3D analysis of macaque brains through their independently developed high-throughput 3D fluorescence imaging technology and primate brain mapping process, drawing the world's first mesoscopic connectivity map of primate brains.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Recently, the team of the Brain Network Group Research Center of the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences has drawn a new map of rhesus monkey brain network. This map is like a 'spatial map', dividing the macaque brain into 304 fine brain regions and quantitatively depicting the anatomical and functional connectivity patterns of each brain region, providing a tool for clarifying the organizational patterns of the brain at a macro scale. The complex behavior of humans is driven by different functional networks in the brain. These networks are essentially collections of brain regions that communicate with each other through functional connections. At present, a large amount of neuroscience research regards non-human primate studies as a core source for elucidating the cognitive neural basis and promoting translational medicine. Therefore, a panoramic brain atlas that can depict the spatial organizational structure of the macaque brain is of great significance for translating research results from macaques to humans.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
