Platonic cubes, also known as Platonic polyhedra, are five types of regular polyhedra: tetrahedra, hexahedrons (cubes), octahedrons, dodecahedra, and icosahedra. In the view of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, these shapes correspond to the fundamental elements of the universe, symbolizing the harmony and perfection of nature.
The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.
The Platonic cubes were not invented by Plato, but were named after the research conducted by Plato and his followers on them. Due to their high degree of symmetry and sense of order, they are commonly referred to as regular polyhedra. The Platonic cube is a three-dimensional shape (polyhedron) in which each face is regular (every angle is equal, every edge is equal) and a two-dimensional shape (polygon). For example, a pyramid based on triangles is composed of equilateral triangles, which are a Platonic cube called a regular tetrahedron.
Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
